    • Hi Gary,
I live in Scotland (Aberdeen) and have been a member of Cruden Bay and Dornoch – great golf courses. Hope you have a great time. Shame you are too early for the new Donald Trump course just outside Aberdeen – Mr Trump is billing this as “the best golf gourse in the world”. It opens for play in July 2012.

      Ken

      • Ken, thanks for the note. Yes looking forward to playing both Cruden Bay and Royal Dornoch. Have heard great reports about both. We might get a sneak peak at the new Trump course – hopefully…

  1. Good luck with the driving times, particularly in the SW of ireland. Played many of your choices in 2009 as a group of six and we are well into the planning for 2013. Enjoy! MR

  2. This trip of yours is epic and has or is going to make numerous other golfers feel very unlucky to not be in a position to join you (myself included). I believe you are going to have a great time and will remember this for the rest of your life!

  3. Good luck, guys. By June, you will be extremely grateful to Ecco for making such comfortable shoes, as there is an awful lot of walking…….after those Wilson golf balls (and you will need some)!!! Great trip.

  4. Good luck Gary, I envied you for a moment then remembered I don’t do 36 a day any more. Just as interesting are the courses you don’t have time for…Crail, the K Club, Elie et al.
Look forward to following your adventures. Trust the ranged is kind.
    All the best, Joe Hoffmann

  5. Hi Gary, as good as Dornoch is, I think you should have a look at driving 30 mins north and playing Brora rather than Dornoch twice. Brora is a very special place. Likewise when you are in Troon there is the Kintyre Express for those with strong stomachs that will get you to Campbeltown and then Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes. The first 8 holes at Machrihanish are as good as anything on the planet.

    Brian

    • Brian, thanks for the note. Good suggestions. I am keen to play Dornoch twice (and photograph it) but will look at the feasibility of going across to Macrihanish as this is one Top 100 we could not fit into our trip.

  6. Gary, that time of year up north there is enough light to go around 3 times in a day. Make sure you play Brora. If I had to pick one course to play everyday it would be Brora.

  7. Hi Guys,

As a keen golfer who has played on some of these courses, I think you will find that Royal Dornoch & the Old Course at Ballybunion are the best two courses in your travels but I haven’t been to Muirfield or Royal County Down yet!! And the Old Course at St Andrews is a wonderful test of golf in the wind and you will love the history, the Swilken Burn, the Open Championships and the beautiful town itself.

Good luck on this epic golfing journey and it would be great to share the fun with my 1987 model Wilson Staff clubs. Enjoy the experience of a lifetime and I look forward to the daily bloggs, the photographs and the book!!

Cheers for now and happy golfing,

    Peter

  8. Hoping the weather gets better for you guys! What a shame you have not included the wonderful links of England’s Atlantic Links (www.atlantic-links.co.uk) … the likes of St Enodoc (Cornwall’s oldest and most beguiling links) and Saunton (probably the best links course in England never to have held an Open Championship) ….worth extending your trip for!

  9. Gary, I’m most envious of the amazing trip you’re on. I played Royal County Down a few years back and it ate me alive. The Old Course was much kinder to me. I’d play it again in a heart beat. If you end up in a bunker on the Road Hole, be sure to think of me.

  10. Inspiring trip, guys. Not much was missed in this massive undertaking. Only Rye, Prince’s, Musselburgh Links, and Prestwick come to mind.

Well done for including off-the-beaten-path’ers Woodhall Spa and Ganton, and for splicing in a few newbies.

11 Open courses! That by itself would be an impressive feat.
